A few folk have asked can I post an update on the project at Kielder so here goes.
Before Christmas one of the biggest mtb trail construction set of works in England to date concluded (just about).
In the 1st week of December (height of the project) we had about 60 men all working on excavators and tracked Dumpers (and just a few vibrating plates) to make the end of the year deadline. This also invovled 10 tipper lorries every day hauling stone to the work sites.
Chuck in 6 inches of snow and horrendous ice, oh constructing a trail on some of the wettest ground conditions in England- remember that nice wet summer/ autumn (that really helped as well!!!!) and you get a feel for the challenges faced.
It was a real credit to everyone involved to get a new blue grade mtb trail built and also not one red trail but two versions of red trail towards Newcastleton.
Add to this a Trials Park is being constructed at present adjacent to Kielder Castle Car Park.
This includes some real Northshore- not black grade but ORANGE (same as Glentress Freeride).
There is going to be a jump trail in this area (small compact section similar to Descend Hamsterleys 4x but single racing (we may it 2 rider wide).
A real Rocky Road made up of rocky jump features.
Want to know about the Trials Area- Speak to David in THE BIKE PLACE Newcastle, along with Nev from Hexham who are the designers of this area.
If you go up to Kielder Castle Car Park in the next two months you will also see the new MTB Hire Centre under construction that will be completed by April. This is quite exciting as the Centre Operator will be tendered Nationally, so thats going to make a big change to the MTB scene in the NE.
For the New mtb trails we will start officially opening them in April, July and September.
The reason for this is to allow all the new drainage to dry out the new trails fully and Kielder Trail Reavers to add in features and also build some bridges, which are missing at the moment. Also this ties in with some high profile events such as AVALANCHE KIELDER 2009 (we are looking at some more exciting events at the moment).
We also now have at Kielder a 27.5 mile Lakeside Way trail around the edge of Kielder Water. Encourage you all to try that- in the coming months 3m wide trail, but really swoopy next to the waterline.
This was constructed at the same time as the mtb trails, so busy times for us all involved with these projects.
Just a wee update to keep you all in the loop, to find out more go up to Kielder and catch up with Kielder Trail Reavers, or follow their website. Trailbuilds are really exciting at the moment with so much going on to get everything finished before we are happy to launch.
Cheers
Alex
