Everything about Mountain Biking in the North East of England

dont take anything back to this shop as you will accused of being a liar! Took an item of clothing back as I had tried it on once and it was to small. To be told by some assistant in front of other customers that they would not change it as I had worn and washed it. He was very friggin abrupt and cocky. This went on for about 15 minutes then he said in a very patronising manner that he would cahnge it if I could find the lable.

This is the shop that advised me that my front brake on a bike a year old (which has been repaired 4 times at my cost) needs grit or mud in it to make it work!!!!!!!!!!

Wont ever go back

so you took the labels off before you tried it on? if that's the case then i'm not surprised they thought you'd worn it, I doubt you'll find many people on here who have had any problems at all with Evans.
does sound a bit daft to take the labels off before trying it on.
could'nt you try it on in the shop?

on the brake problem
most disc brakes are shit until you've given them a good grafting through the mud and shite.
"and now the science bit"
the grit and mud act as abbrassive agents to hone the disc and pad into a matching profile thus enhancing the stopping power .

on the whole Evans staff ar eok except that Gary mac , he's terrible
i have had excellent service from the guys at evans, there's always going to be a few problems from the thousands of people they see every week. So i ain't going to knock them. and yes mud and shite is exactly whats needed to get your pads sorted!
as for taking the lables off, if you know anything about customer service this is not a criminal offence, as for being accused of being a liar that really wants me to shop there, as for the brake advice is bollocks when they over a year have replaced then 4 times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought a bike for a mate there last month. When i got it back to mine i realised the chain was very sticky to the touch. I phoned the guy who i bought it off and he said to bring it back in if i wasnt happy but it should be fine. I got him to chuck in a bottle of muck off, so not really thinking it would work but hoping the tackiness was dust as it was an 08 model i gave it a quick degrease, dried and relubed and we went for a quick blast round dry tracks.

When we got back to mine, the chain was still very sticky but had now picked up an abrasive paste of dusty grit. I wasnt to keen on this as the chain looked like it could damage the cassette or jockey wheels.

Took it back for them to have a look at it and at first they tried to sell me some more degreaser. Now i wasnt sure what was on the chain but it didnt seem good. I either wanted it explained to me that it wasnt harmful, or it fixing. I did not want to be sold more products (i have enough anyway for my on bike).

The manager then comes over and tries to tell me that the dust has stuck to the muck off and it was nothing to do with the shop. Well this was pure bollox and rightly so i told him. He did then take the bike out the back and properly degrease the chain but still wanted me to believe that it was the muck off that was the problem, even though id rang the store as soon as i got it home.

Anyway, and i reckon a few of you are there already, with a bit of research it turns out that the grease is called cosmoline and is a long term storage grease for mechanical parts etc.

Opinion (it appears) is divided on whether it is better to leave this on the chain as it is pressured into the gaps or to thoroughly degrease and relube with that of your choice. Seems to be down to how well your going to take care of your chain.

My problem was that i am no expert, far from it, so i rely on people in bike shops to give me the answers. However, and this rule follows for all situations, it is always better to tell someone you dont know the answer but you will find out and come back to them, than it is to bluff as often you get found out and then your crediblity is shot.
